If Walls Could Talk, What Would Yours Say?

22nd September 2016 | Inspiring Interiors

It’s funny how interior trends often go full circle.  The latest craze to make a grand comeback is wallpaper fabric which instinctively throws you back to childhood memories of the psychedelic, whacky prints of the 70’s or 80’s!
Little did we think however that it would be the major interior trend that it is today?  Long gone are the brash combinations of orange and pink flowers or olive green and brown prints however.  It goes without saying that wall fabrics have come a long way since then.  Recreated with a contemporary eye in much richer, muted tones, wall fabrics can inject a much needed pizazz and warmth to a room.  From subtle patterns to bolder plusher designs, wall fabrics come in a plethora of textures too, adding another design dimension to the overall style of a living space.

Paint was the safer option up to recent years but when combined with wall fabrics, this can really transform a home.  You don’t have to cover the entirety of your home either as was once the case years ago.  Chosen carefully, wall fabrics can have just as much of an impact as accessories, pieces of furniture or even pieces of art.

If you’re thinking of ‘layering up’, here’s a few tips to help you make the right choice:

Consider The Overall Room Style

A good place to start is to consider room style.  Let’s face it, you’re not going to put a bold geometric fabric in a room with traditional, intricate furniture?  If it’s a chic, contemporary room, consider metallic tones alongside large scale designs and shapes.  If it’s a dreamy and idealistic style you’re going for, think about gentle damasks and florals with fine lines in muted, pastel shades.  If it’s a more classic feel, consider traditional patterns such as baroque designs in rich flock fabric.

Touchy Feely Textures

If you’re not brave enough to choose something which seems a bit too overpowering, go for a more subtle approach and look at textured wall fabrics in plainer, more subtle colours.  While these may not have the instant wow factor, they will safely blend with the rest of your interiors.

Statement Feature Walls

You don’t have to go overkill on wall fabrics, choosing one feature wall can give just as much, if not more impact in a room when cleverly combined with a complementary paint.  Feature walls can allow you also to be a bit bolder when it comes to colours and patterns and can create a real visual point of interest.
